About Our Director: Ms. Lucretia L. Davis
Ms. Lucretia Davis holds a bachelor’s degree in music education, magna cum laude, from Virginia State University and a master’s of science degree, summa cum laude, in arts administration from Drexel University. Since 2006, Ms. Davis has been employed with Hanover County Public Schools as orchestra director at Oak Knoll Middle School and Hanover High School. Ms. Davis’ ensembles are said to be very expressive and energetic. They consistently receive superior and excellent ratings at competition and state orchestra assessments.
She is an experienced guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician throughout the state of Virginia and was recently awarded the 2021 R.E.B. award for teaching excellence by the Community Foundation for a Greater Richmond. Additionally, she frequently performs for area churches, weddings, universities, and events and is the concertmaster for the Petersburg Symphony Orchestra in Petersburg, VA. Lucretia Davis is dedicated to the advocacy of school orchestra programs being offered in every school system. She credits her love of music education to her past orchestra director’s guidance and love for the arts. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and organizing things. She currently resides in Henrico County, Virginia.
Strings Ensemble - General Overview
Strings ensemble students will perform, create, investigate, and connect through the playing of a stringed instrument. Students will use advancing articulations and bowings, demonstrate vibrato, perform scales in two octaves, and perform music at an intermediate level of difficulty grades II-III ½. Students will describe concepts common to music and other disciplines and will be involved in discussing various cultures, styles, composers, and historical periods. Students may have one to three individual and/or group projects throughout the year. Students in strings ensemble have had a minimum of one year of instruction.
Beginning Strings - General Overview
Beginning strings students will perform, create, investigate, and connect through the enjoyment of playing a stringed instrument. Students will demonstrate proper care of instruments, basic positions, fingerings, tone production, and will read and perform repertoire at the beginning level grades 1-1 ½. Students in beginning strings have very little or no prior experience at the start of this course.
What to Expect As a Member of the Orchestra
Students will perform in a fall, winter, spring, and state assessment concert. Additionally, students will perform during school assemblies, special programs, and competitions at Kings Dominion or Busch Gardens in the later part of the year. Orchestra members will learn to work together, to collaborate, be creative and responsible students working effectively, yet having fun to meet our performance goals.
